How To Make Smash Burgers With Onions

Mr. Cast Iron demonstrates how to make cast iron smash burgers with onions in this video. An Oklahoma smash burger consists of grilled or caramelized onion, ground beef, and cheese "smashed" flat on a medium-high heat griddle or cast iron skillet. You can toast your buns or not. That's totally up to you. Originally the smashed burgers is believed to have started during The Great Depression of 1929-1939 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The Oklahoma onion burgers are said to have started because ground beef was hard to come by. However, onions were plentiful, so these two ingredients were combined to make the meat go further to produce more food and feed more people. We like mustard on ours, but you can use whatever sauce you prefer and top your smash burger with whatever you like. Pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, and avocados are excellent choices, but they are best enjoyed the old-fashioned way!
