Flaking Cast Iron Skillet? Is It Bad Seasoning or Black Paint
Feb 8, 2026
IRecently, someone asked me about a flaking cast iron skillet. He had just opened a brand new pan and noticed what looked like peeling. His question was simple:
Is this bad seasoning… or is it black paint?
If you’re buying a new skillet — let’s say Lodge for example — they do not paint their cast iron. They pre-season it at the factory. That’s oil baked onto the surface, usually one or two coats at high heat.
Now sometimes you may see a small spot that looks like it flaked. Most of the time, that’s just excess oil that bubbled up during seasoning. The manufacturer may grind or torch that little bubble down before it leaves the factory. It can look like a chip, but it isn’t paint.
New cast iron should not be coated with paint. And it shouldn’t be heavily chipping either. A tiny spot where seasoning pooled or bubbled? That can happen.
In this video, I show you exactly what that looks like and how to tell the difference.
If you’ve got questions about your cast iron, drop them below. I’ll do my best to answer them.
