0:00
hey folks I just want to welcome you
0:01
back to Mr cast iron and today what
0:03
we're going to talk about is a little
0:04
bit of vintage cast iron and some of the
0:08
uh identification marks that used to try
0:11
to identific identify a piece of cast
0:15
iron so here's uh my Three Notch Lodge
0:18
you've seen this in many videos here
0:20
it's got the uh distinguished teardrop
0:24
handle on it and of course it has one
0:27
two three notches in it and it was made
0:30
USA it's a number eight and you can see
0:33
that the teardrop handle is very
0:36
distinctive for a Lodge cast iron
0:38
skillet this one right here basically is
0:40
about somewhere in the
0:43
1960s range so it's it's fairly old too
0:47
now recently I acquired this Skillet and
0:51
it still needs to be stripped and
0:53
seasoned but this is a vintage Martin
0:57
Stove and Range with the uh signature
1:01
hamburger logo here this looks like a
1:03
hamburger bun and on the top here
1:05
underneath all this crud uh and carbon
1:08
buildup that I've got to strip and clean
1:10
it says Martin across the top and Stove
1:13
and Range in the middle as the hamburger
1:15
um Patty and then the bottom bun says
1:18
Florence Alabama so you can see that
1:21
it's distinguished by the hamburger logo
1:24
another distinguishing factor is kind of
1:27
the the diamond shaped handle
1:30
uh but also it has this
1:33
recessed uh looks like a teardrop handle
1:37
which would kind of make you want to at
1:40
first think when you looked at it from
1:41
the top side that this could possibly be
1:43
a lodge but after further inspection you
1:46
can tell that it's definitely not a
1:49
lodge it's a Martin Stove and Range and
1:51
with that recessed handle now also I
1:55
recently acquired another Skillet and
1:59
it's it's got quite a bit of rust and
2:02
carbon buildup on it also so I've got to
2:04
get it stripped down it's slick slick
2:06
bottom like all three of these and they
2:09
machined cast iron back in those days
2:12
the older uh cast iron skillets were
2:14
machined like this and they wasn't rough
2:17
like your modern-day cast iron is but
2:20
when I looked at this skillet from first
2:23
glance at it when I first bought these I
2:26
thought well this is a number nine
2:30
uh Lodge cast iron with two por spouts
2:33
there's a number nine distinguished Mark
2:35
right here on the handle and so when I
2:38
flipped it over I thought okay well
2:40
there's one single Notch right here at
2:43
12:00 and there's no other notches on
2:45
the heat ring just that one notch so I
2:48
thought well this is an unmarked single
2:50
Notch Lodge cast iron skillet so I got
2:54
to look in a little closer and as I
2:56
looked I could see the identifying
3:05
identical to the Martin Stove and
3:08
Range um Skillet here with the logo on
3:11
it and so this handle gave it away that
3:15
this was actually a single Notch
3:18
unmarked Martin Stove and Range now the
3:22
thing about these two Skillets are
3:23
Martin Stove and Range was actually
3:27
created or they actually uh man
3:30
manufactured cast iron from
3:32
1917 to somewhere in the 1950s and then
3:36
they basically quit making cast iron
3:38
they continued to make stoves but they
3:41
they discontinued doing cast iron
3:43
skillets and stuff like that so I know
3:45
that these two Skillets range anywhere
3:48
1917 to somewhere in the 1950 ranges but
3:52
anyway I wanted to point this out to you
3:54
because this really surprised me with
3:57
this number nine I haven't ever seen one
4:00
like this unmarked other than like a
4:04
lodge or something like that but not
4:06
with this distinguishing handle like a
4:08
Martin stove and rain so anyway I just
4:11
wanted to share that with you guys about
4:13
vintage cast iron it's it's awesome to
4:16
collect it's fun to try to identify and
4:20
some of these things you just can't
4:22
really determine exactly how old they
4:25
are but you know the range roughly that
4:28
what they were created and so it's
4:30
pretty exciting I'm looking forward to
4:33
getting my system set back up get them
4:36
stripped down and reasoned and once we
4:38
do we're going to show those to you too
4:40
as well so you guys have a great day now
4:42
it's Mike and Mrs cast iron over here
4:44
we'll talk to you later take care
