Should You Polish Cast Iron

Dec 5, 2023
*I don’t recommend sanding/grinding/polishing cast iron — this video explains why and what to do instead. In this video, Mr. Cast Iron answers a question I get all the time: should you sand or polish cast iron (especially Lodge cast iron) to make it smoother and “more nonstick”? A lot of folks want that mirror-smooth vintage cast iron feel — but sanding, grinding, or polishing can create new problems: uneven surfaces, scratch patterns, rust risk, and seasoning that doesn’t bond the way people expect. My stance: I do not recommend power tools or grinding cast iron. For most skillets, the real fix is simple: proper heat control, thin seasoning, and cooking on it regularly. If your skillet has a sharp burr or rough edge, I prefer leaving the cooking surface alone and addressing only the sharp spot carefully (not a full sand/polish job). * Watch this next: Can You Sand A Cast Iron Skillet https://youtu.be/mGEaxm58iYY *This video is for educational purposes and shares my personal experience — not instructions to modify cookware.
