Have you ever tried fried cabbage before? Or do you already make your own version of skillet fried cabbage?

Oh, brother, if you have not, you need to try this delicious recipe. It’s one that I love, and most of our family loves it too!

I realize not everyone likes cabbage, but if you do, I think you will enjoy this one.

Cooking fried cabbage is really easy. You just can’t go wrong with this simple little recipe.

I like that it makes an awesome side dish or it’s good by itself. I’ve eaten it by itself many times!

Healthy Fried Cabbage

Cabbage is such a healthy vegetable. There are several health benefits to eating cabbage. Of course, I’m not giving any medical advice, but it is true.

Cabbage is loaded with nutrients and vitamins and even helps with digestion.

Fried cabbage probably is not the most healthy way to eat it, but then again, it’s fried, right?

Maybe not, but it sure is good, I know that!

Skillet Fried Cabbage With Bacon

Bacon makes everything better, so they say, and I tend to agree.

So does sausage when it comes to fried cabbage.

Using a deep cast iron skillet to fry it all in is very helpful, too, because you can cook everything in one skillet.

I like that it can all be cooked in one pan, so I don’t have to clean up many skillets and dishes.

The video below demonstrates how easy it is to make a great pan of skillet fried cabbage!

How To Make Skillet Fried Cabbage

  • 1 whole head of cabbage (washed and cored)
  • 1 pkg summer sausage (cut into chunks or chopped)
  • 1 pkg bacon (cut pieces in half before cooking)
  • 1 med white onion (sliced)
  • 1 dash salt and pepper (to taste)
  1. Wash the cabbage and cut out the core. Next, cut cabbage into thin slices.
  2. Heat cast iron skillet and fry the bacon. Remove bacon to a plate covered with a paper towel to drain. Do Not Throw Dripping In Skillet Away!
  3. Add summer sausage to bacon drippings and heat for approximately 3-4 minutes. Remove from the grease to drain on the paper towel.
  4. Next, add your onion to the grease and cook for about 1-2 minutes until soft. Add cabbage and stir together. It will be piled pretty high in the skillet, but that’s okay; it will cook down.
  5. Stir cabbage and onion regularly.
  6. Once the cabbage cooks down a good bit for approximately 6-8 minutes, add sausage and mix. Cook for 2 minutes more.
  7. Next, add your crumbled-up bacon to the mixture, stir together and cook for 2-3 minutes more.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. *** cabbage has a strong odor when cooking*** To help eliminate odor while cooking, add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the cooking cabbage. It will not affect the taste of your cabbage.

Does cabbage need to be washed before cooking?

Cabbage needs the outer two or three layers of leaves removed before cooking, and it is best to wash and rinse any potential dust or dirt that may be present.

How do you cut cabbage for frying?

The best way to cut cabbage for frying is to cut the head of the cabbage into two parts. Next, cut the core out. Then you want to peel the first one or two outer layers off and discard them. Next, you will want to wash the cabbage. Finally, you can cut the cabbage lengthwise into strips, or you can cut it into squares for frying. I prefer strips when frying mine.

How long should you cook cabbage for?

If you are boiling cabbage, usually 10-12 minutes works great. If you are frying cabbage, 10-12 minutes works well, too, but if you want your cabbage a little more al dente, it’s okay to fry it for less time.
