How To Clean A Cast Iron Skillet
In this video, Mr. Cast Iron shows you how to wash a cast iron skillet in three different ways without damaging your seasoning. How do I clean a cast iron skillet? Ideally, the best way to wash your cookware is immediately after cooking while the skillet is still hot or at least warm. When cleaning cast iron, never add cold water to a hot skillet because you can crack it or warp it. Always add hot water to a hot skillet. The second technique is to add a little water to the skillet and place it on the burner to heat up. As it heats up, the food particles will begin to loosen up, and then you can go back to the sink and rinse it out using a stiff bristle brush. Next, bring it back to the burner and heat any moisture out. Then, add a small amount of oil to give it a maintenance coat of seasoning. The last technique is one of my favorites when cleaning an iron skillet: using salt with a little oil as a paste. As the skillet heats up, wipe the paste around using a paper towel. As you do, the salt will begin to turn brownish as it pulls the impurities and food particles out. Once the skillet is too hot to continue swiping, move back to the sink and rinse the salt and oil out. I like this method because as you are cleaning the cast iron skillet, it will season it as you go. Want to learn more?
